Scaled model testing for the helical strakes in reducing the vortex-induced vibrations

Abstract The accuracy of the prediction suppression efficiency triplex helical strakes for vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) is important in offshore industry risers. Towing tank tests 1:1 section model have been used study one degree freedom; however, this method requires a long time both preparation and testing. In study, scaled testing based on flume oscillating frame proposed, which measured amplitude forces bare pipe strakes. were carried out TU Delft, with range Reynolds number between 6000 20000. results compared real test applied towing to evaluate accuracy. strake scale agrees full-scale test, providing support reducing vibrations.
